Mochi pounding is a big local New Year's tradition in Hawaii besides the usual popping fireworks and consuming poke. Mochi is a glutinous sweet rice that can be fried or eaten as dessert. Traditionally mochi is used to make ozoni, a good luck soup eaten on New Year's Day. Mahalo Sato ‘Ohana! They have been hosting mochi pounding for over 40 years. They even make shirts and people fly in from all islands to participate. What originally started as something small has turned into a big family and friend New Years mochi pounding event where people place orders. It was nice to see all ages and races attend.
